Paper Stomp Rockets
I run a free summertime activity program for kids as part of my job in the city where I live. So I've got a lot of fun little projects up my sleeves, and I'm always on the lookout for more. One of the more popular summertime activities in my repertoire is homemade stomp rockets. Stomp rockets are great because they are both creative and physical.
Create a Maker Space for Kids
Do you remember being a kid and having an amazing idea to build something awesome? You see movies like Home Alone in which the protagonist is clever and capable enough to create sophisticated contraptions that work just as planned, and you know you can do the same. You are so full of enthusiasm and determination, yet when you set out to make your creation a reality, the result falls short of your vision.

How to Make Cardboard Automata
Perhaps the most famous automaton, the fabled Turk, ended up being a clever hoax, not a true automaton. To see an honest historical automaton, one needs to visit the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, where Maillardet’s Automaton is displayed. This automaton, built around 1800, is a masterpiece, able to write three poems and draw four drawings! Our first cardboard automaton will be less ambitious than Maillardet’s Automaton but more real than The Turk. Building automata is a great engineering challenge that scales from child maker to adult in its complexity. It varies in the types of materials from which it is built and the story the automaton tells through the machinery’s movements.
