Android Niceties lovely ui The End Of User-Friendly Design | Co.Design | business + design There’s a new sub-genre of ghost stories out there today—one where the antagonist isn't quite human. You can find these tales on user forums for many voice assistants: One user reports he and his wife heard Alexa’s voice coming from their kitchen in the middle of the night. Another reported hearing a strange man’s voice through his Echo. "What the hell?" wrote one user on Reddit who was "freaked" after Echo behaved unusually. These stories—usually just aberrations explained by user error—externalize the unease we feel with our new roommates. More and more Americans interact with some form of AI on a daily basis, whether through a voice assistant from Apple, Google, Amazon, or Microsoft, or through their apps, devices, and cars. These are the skeuomorphs of this new field—think of them as affordances for AI. In many cases, these affordances do nothing more than enhance the user experience, benefiting users. There’s a lot of good evidence for this approach to interaction design.
Making it Work: Flat Design and Color Trends We’ve talked a lot here about the flat design trend here at Designmodo. We’ve raved about it, showed you plenty of cool examples and even developed a free user interface kit for you to download and use for projects. But what if you want to do it yourself? One of the most important parts of the trend is color. Flat Design Refresher Flat design is a technique that uses simple effects – or lack thereof – to create a design scheme that does not include three-dimensional attributes. Some call the look of flat design simple, although it can be quite complex. Learn more about the flat design trend in a previous Designmodo article. Defining a Color Palette When it comes to color, flat design works with a variety of colors, but most commonly designers are choosing to go bold and bright. The other thing that makes flat design different in terms of color? What we are seeing more of with flat design and color though is the matching of tone and saturation. Bright Colors So where do you start? Retro Colors
Inspired UI - mobile patterns Who Can Use It's a tool that brings attention and understanding to how color contrast can affect different people with visual impairments. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) covers a wide range of recommendations for making Web content more accessible. Just a tiny part of making the web more accessible is accommodating for those with a form of blindness or low vision. The standard grading system is a great start, but I thought I'd try to humanize the people who are affected by the different grades. Where did you get the info from? The percentages are sourced from both colour-blindness.com and Vision Australia. Your maths is off, it doesn't add up to 100%...? Good eyes! I'm fascinated by how this works, can you tell me more? Of course! For cataracts, glaucoma, low vision, and the situational events I've personally created simulations to help identify their rating. What does a failing grade mean? The grading uses a combination of color contrast, text size and text weight. Can I help contribute?
Making Beautiful Android App Icons Posted by Roman Nurik, Android Developer Relations For most users, the launcher icon (sometimes referred to as the app icon) is the first impression of your app. As higher density screens on both phones and tablets gain popularity, it's important to make sure your launcher icon is crisp and high quality. In addition to the current launcher icon guidelines, please also refer to these additional important guidelines when creating your icons: Launcher icons are 48dp square and should be provided for MDPI, HDPI, XHDPI, and XXHDPI densities—at the very least XHDPI and XXHDPI.The 512px Google Play listing icon should have the same content as the launcher icon, except for minor additional badging.Launcher icons should be designed specifically for Android. Note that tablets and other large screen devices request a launcher icon that is one density size larger than the device's actual density, so you should provide your launcher icon at the highest density possible.
The Ultimate Wine-Pairing Infographic I’ve never understood brussel sprouts. Oh, they’re delicious, roasted in a cast iron pan with big hunks of garlic. But I’ve tried reds, and I’ve tried whites. Neither seems to pair all that well. Other than this one misstep, Pairing Wine & Food is like a tube map for your gullet. Of course, even if you memorize all of the wine wisdom in this chart, you still may not agree in practice. A print is available for $20. Iconography An icon is a graphic that takes up a small portion of screen real estate and provides a quick, intuitive representation of an action, a status, or an app. When you design icons for your app, it's important to keep in mind that your app may be installed on a variety of devices that offer a range of pixel densities, as mentioned in Devices and Displays. But you can make your icons look great on all devices by providing each icon in multiple sizes. Because you will deliver each icon in multiple sizes to support different densities, the design guidelines below refer to the icon dimensions in dp units, which are based on the pixel dimensions of a medium-density (MDPI) screen. So, to create an icon for different densities, you should follow the 2:3:4:6:8 scaling ratio between the five primary densities (medium, high, x-high, xx-high, and xxx-high respectively).
