Most of the works were acquired between 1890 and 1936 by Sir Henry Wellcome and his agents across the globe. The images reflect Wellcome’s collecting interests and were intended to form a documentary resource that reflects the cultural and historical contexts of health and medicine.

Powerhouse Museum on Flickr What you can find in Flickr The Powerhouse Museum has many projects going on in Flickr, one of the largest online photo communities in the world. In Flickr you can find some of our photographic collections, public discussions around exhibitions in development, and plenty of other photography from around the Museum. Since then photo-sharing has changed the way exhibitions are curated and promoted with Flickr discussion groups focusing on exhibitions. The Photo of the Day blog also shares the museum's historic photography collection with the Flickr community.

Finland is crowdsourcing its new copyright law Internet activists in Finland, upset with the country's strict copyright laws, are ready to take advantage of the country's promise to vote on any citizen-proposed bill that reaches 50,000 signatures. The group Common Sense in Copyright, which is organizing a campaign for the bill, says its aim "is simple and reasonable: We want a fair and just copyright law in Finland." And while that's true of digital rights groups in any country, Finland is unique: In accordance with a 2012 law, any citizen can create or sign on to a bill using a system called Open Ministry. If it receives 50,000 names in six months, the Finnish Parliament must put it to a vote. Simply called "To Make Sense of the Copyright Act," the proposal went live Wednesday and has until July to meet its quota.

Extensive Archive of Avant-Garde & Modernist Magazines (1890-1939) Now Available Online Having once been involved in the founding of an arts magazine, I have experienced intimately the ways in which such an endeavor can depend upon a community of equals pooling a diversity of skills. The process can be painful: egos compete, certain elements seek to dominate, but the successful product of such a collaborative effort will represent a living community of artists, writers, editors, and other masters of technique who subordinate their individual wills, temporarily, to the will of a collective, creating new gestalt identities from conceptual atoms. As Monoskop---“a wiki for collaborative studies of art, media and the humanities”---points out, “the whole” of an arts magazine, “could become greater than the sum of its parts.” Often when this happens, a publication can serve as the platform or nucleus of an entirely new movement.

Enjoy! Picture Australia Picture Australia has been absorbed into Trove. It was originally launched in September 2000, and at that time, was a unique and ground breaking service, bringing together digitised images from cultural heritage collections around Australia for not only all Australians to see but also the world. Contemporary images were sourced from Flickr via a series of Groups, which ensured individual contributions to Picture Australia were included in the snapshot of Australiana. We will continue with this tradition using the Trove: Australia in Pictures Group.

Students: copycat, sort of One way I often suggest to my students to improve their writing ability is to read a lot. When doing so, I suggest they notice how writers use grammar, vocabulary, punctuation and organisation. I recommend trying to incorporate these samples into their own writing. But as so aptly demonstrated by the photo above, my advice is often taken too literally, through no fault of their own, and I face continued writing I don’t expect: improper punctuation, sentence fragments, odd terminology, inappropriate abbreviations and the like. When pointed out, mutual perplexity ensues, reducing my well-intentioned building blocks to rejected rubble. So where is the problem? Space in Images Captured on 1 October 2018 by the Copernicus Sentinel-2A satellite, this image features part of northeast Kenya – an area east of the East African Rift. The region tends to be very arid and this false-colour image has been processed to highlight different types of rock, soil and sand in pinks, purples and yellows. The bright green at the top of the image depicts vegetation, but the rest of the area appears relatively devoid of vegetation.

Educational Technology and Mobile Learning: What Teachers Need to Know about Creative Commons some of the digital elements our students use so often are photos and images. They include them in their blog posts and wikis and some even share them on popular social networking sites like Facebook. As a rule of thumb the first resource they have recourse to when looking for such images is image search engines like Google Image. But do they know that images are not created from the void and that they have their owners and therefore some reserved rights as to the republication of their images ? U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Pomological Watercolor Collection The USDA Pomological Watercolor Collection documents fruit and nut varieties developed by growers or introduced by USDA plant explorers around the turn of the 20th century.
