Turn Slides and Negatives Into Digital Photos. By Andrew Lewis Preserving 35mm photos on a computer is a great way to keep them safe, and chances are that either you or someone you know has an old box of irreplaceable memories waiting to be scanned.
The problem is that an ordinary scanner doesn’t really scan slides or negatives properly. The reason is that slides should be illuminated from behind, while conventional scanners are designed to capture reflected light from a document. You could go out and buy a dedicated film scanner, but there is a much cheaper alternative if you already have a flatbed scanner or scanner/copier attached to your computer. A simple cardboard adapter can be used to capture the light from the scanner and reflect it behind the slide. Once the adapter is in place, you can scan the slide as though it were an ordinary document. Materials. StandScan ($20) vs. ScanDock ($400): Which smartphone scanner is best?

Growing up in China, inventor Ji Shen had a notion to improve the lives of teachers in his country's crowded schools: a machine that would simplify the grading process. So he made a camera that hovered over answer sheets and scanned data. His grading software didn't make the grade, but the camera concept turned out to be the forerunner of a raft of scanners, including this, the new HoverCam Mini 5, for Pathway Innovations and Technologies, the San Diego-based company Ji established three years ago.
Pathway, which has now sold hundreds of thousands of units worldwide (it costs £299 for UK residents), bills the Mini 5 as the smallest 5MP scanning camera -- it folds to the size of a Snickers bar. XCANEX Portable Document and Book Scanner. A Matter of Resolution Without a doubt, linear sensors in flatbed scanners produce higher resolutions than area sensors in cameras.
However the 600 DPI found in conventional scanners are almost never used by knowledgeable users. Not only 600 DPI files are humongous and extremely slow to scan, using half of that resolving power is more than enough to read most documents. Xcanex could have been designed with a higher resolution but by doing that would render it several times pricier and bulkier - this would defeat our purpose of wanting to create an affordable and portable solution.
With its 8-megapixel image sensor, Xcanex is able to capture text characters with width or height down to 1mm with full legibility. Guide > Scanning a Magazine. Scanning If you have the hard drive space, I highly recommend saving the initial scan as a TIF file.
It is a lossless format, so no information is lost to compression, and the quality doesn't degrade each time you save it. The files are large though. Each scan is about 25.5 megs, making a 200 page unedited magazine take up almost 5 gigs of space. If you don't have that kind of room, change the settings to JPG at the highest quality possible. I mentioned bleed through when talking about auto document feeders. ISIS Document Scanning made easy with SimpleIndex. Virtually all document scanners support both the TWAIN and ISIS driver standards.
TWAIN is more common and is usually the only driver provided with consumer scanner models. ISIS is the driver standard developed by Pixel Translations. ISIS provides a more standardized interface for high-speed scanners, and is often required to scan at the scanners rated speed. TWAIN scanning is supported in all versions of SimpleIndex. Support for ISIS is included with SimpleIndex Full and available as an Add-on for other versions. SimpleIndex streamlines the process of scanning books and magazines. ScanSnap SV600 Desktop Document Scanner : Fujitsu Australia. A New Perspective on Scanning Easy to digitize different document types using the new VI Technology - VI Technology combines a lens with variable depth of field, a direction controlled LED lamp and a CCD linear image sensor to minimize unevenness in image quality. This ensures distortion is removed and scanning produces uniform document quality.
As a result even large documents and bound books can be easily digitized. Able to scan newspapers and magazines up to A3 size*1 - No need to cut or fold.
