WHAT’S IN MY BAG? – Uprooted – Medium
This year, nearly 100,000 men, women and children from war-torn countries in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia have fled their homes and traveled by rubber dinghies across the Aegean Sea to Lesbos, Greece. Refugees travel light, for their trek is as dangerous as it is arduous. They are detained, shot at, hungry. Smugglers routinely exploit them, promising safety for a price, only to squeeze them like sardines into tiny boats. Most have no option but to shed whatever meager belongings they may have salvaged from their journeys. Those allowed to bring extra baggage aboard often toss it overboard, frantically dumping extra weight as the leaky boats take on water.
How Many Countries in the World
Now that is a question that's somewhat difficult to answer, as there is no one right answer. Many sources offer different answers, and depending on the source, there are 189, 191, 192, 193, 194, 195 or 196 independent countries in the world today. NOTE: On Saturday, July 9, 2011, southern Sudan declared itself the independent country of South Sudan. This is the culmination of a six-year process that ended a long, brutal civil war that caused the deaths of millions. In many ways this is still a controversial event, and the country's status could possibly change in the future.

OTL: The Long, Strange Trip of Dock Ellis - MLB
In the mid-1990s, Pierce was invited to work at an old-timers' baseball fantasy camp in Reno, Nev. Ellis was there. So was Blue, who did end up starting against Ellis in the 1971 All-Star Game. And Bobby Tolan, another former big leaguer, who had played with Ellis and Pierce on a youth squad in Los Angeles. Every day, the routine was the same: Under the blue desert sky, the old ballplayers would meet with the campers, run drills, play games.
Google gives Indians a virtual ‘tryst with destiny’ on Independence Day
At midnight on August 14, 1947, India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, delivered one of the great speeches of the 20th century: “Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge… At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom.” Today, Google transports you back in time to those stirring moments. A Google Maps virtual tour lets you retrace the footsteps of Nehru from his oath in Parliament to the Red Fort where he unfurled the Indian flag and addressed the nation – a tradition that current prime minister Narendra Modi carries forward today. A virtual exhibit from the Google Cultural Institute also lets you go inside the Red Fort complex where Mughal emperors once lived. Images from the Nehru museum depict India’s freedom struggle. There’s also a tour of the dreaded cellular jail in the Andaman islands where freedom-fighters were tortured.

Some common visual learning strategies include creating graphic organizers, diagramming, mind mapping, outlining and more.
Growing up in the world's largest refugee camp
Story highlights One day in 1991, gunmen from the Hawiye clan attacked my father’s shop in Qoryooley, a city in southern Somalia. When my father, who belonged to one of the main clans fighting the Hawiye escaped, he told us we had to flee. My parents later told me that gunmen from a coalition of clans had killed many people and looted the town on several occasions. I was just three, so this was all recounted to me by my parents.
