Technology, when used appropriately, can help make science classroom a site of active learning and critical thinking, furthering student inquiry and connections with the materials. Teachers can use technology to enable students to explore fundamental curriculum issues and answer core questions. Students can use the Internet, electronic databases, applets and other online sources to gather information. They can use spreadsheets, virtual labs, and other programs to store, organize, and analyze information. Students can also integrate multimedia desktop publishing, web publishing, video and audio editing, as well as graphics programs to create and present information in innovative and engaging ways. A Math Framework for Multiple Grade Levels As a K–12 district math coach, I travel to 67 classrooms and participate in math instruction at different grade levels. Traveling outside of my school district, I’ve communicated with many pre-K through university math educators in person, on campuses, at conferences, and through social media. I’ve encountered rich math experiences at the secondary level, but found that they could not easily be transferred to primary classrooms. Likewise, I’ve experienced some highly effective practices in primary classrooms that would be difficult to implement in secondary settings. And I’ve noticed that elementary teachers generally converse with other elementary teachers and secondary teachers most often converse with one another.
Coping With Math Anxiety What Is Math Anxiety? A famous stage actress was once asked if she had ever suffered from stage-fright, and if so how she had gotten over it. She laughed at the interviewer’s naive assumption that, since she was an accomplished actress now, she must not feel that kind of anxiety. She assured him that she had always had stage fright, and that she had never gotten over it. Instead, she had learned to walk on stage and perform—in spite of it. ODE Extended Standards The Ohio Academic Content Standards – Extended (OACS-E) also are commonly known as "the extended standards." These standards help to ensure that students with significant cognitive disabilities are provided with multiple ways to learn and demonstrate knowledge. At the same time, the extended standards are designed to maintain the rigor and high expectations of Ohio’s Learning Standards. The Offices for Curriculum, Assessment and Exceptional Children have worked collaboratively since July 2011 in the creation of extensions to Ohio’s Learning Standards for English Language Arts and Math as well as the revised standards for Science and Social Studies. A committee comprised of special educators, regular educators, parents, administrators and other stakeholders in Ohio came together in the writing of these extensions to be used for students participating in the Alternate Assessment.
