VISTA's Year in Health Sciences Our mission is to revolutionize the way people think about learning. “People learn best when they are pursuing goals that they really care about and when what they learn helps them attain their goals. The best means of learning has always been experience.” -- Roger Schank Engines for Education, a non-profit founded by Roger Schank, was formed in 2002 to create new learning environments to replace out-dated and wrong-headed educational notions. At Engines for Education, we believe that we can replace boring and increasingly irrelevant schools with new exciting learning environments. We are attempting to chang e both what and how children learn .

Worlds of Making @ NMHS Setting up a Makerspace has been a priority of mine from the moment I started here at New Milford High School, and it’s already well on its way to being achieved. Having a school principal who provides the perfect mix of encouragement and autonomy has, of course, been a great help, but it has also been very much a team effort: the school’s tech team and custodians have been very supportive and cooperative, along with a diverse variety of students interested in ‘making’ experiences. At the heart of the vision for my Makerspace is to develop the space and to provide resources and opportunities that will aid in promoting web literacy. These components encompass Mozilla's Web Literacy Standard.

Introduction to Basic Electronics, Electronic Components and Projects Learning about basic electronics and creating your own projects is a lot easier than you may think. In this tutorial, we’re going to give you a brief overview of common electronic components and explain what their functions are. You will then learn about schematic diagrams and how they are used to design and build circuits. And finally, you will put this information to use by creating your first basic circuit. The Inquiry Process Explained Visually for Teachers Learning is all about being curious and inquisitive. It is a process in which learners explore the unknown through their senses using both sensory and motor skills. Being involved and engaged in the learning task is the key to a successful learning journey and to elicit this kind of engagement from learners, teachers need to nurture a learning environment where students take responsibility for their learning and 'where they are only shown where to look but not told what to see'. Such environment definitely requires a solid approach and an informed strategy to learning one that is dubbed: inquiry-based learning. Inquiry-based learning is essential in developing the most solicited 21st century skills : problem solving and critical thinking. As a teacher, you might be wondering about ways to inculcate the precepts of strategy into your teaching and lesson planning.

Using Labs When you join NOVA Labs, you'll be actively participating in science. The data are real. The questions are real. The challenges you'll encounter are the same challenges that scientists and engineers are grappling with today. Whether you have 10 minutes, a few hours, or the time to stay involved for weeks or months, NOVA Labs provides a variety of opportunities for you to participate in the scientific process. Spark Imagination in Your Library: With Monthly STEM Challenges What are Monthly STEM Challenges? STEM Challenges are any project/activity that involves STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) Projects can be very high tech (involving robotics, coding, computers, 3D printing, etc) or can be low tech or no tech (recyclables, paper, cardboard, pipe cleaners, straws, etc.) Students are given a basic idea to complete, materials, and rules for completing, but must figure out the how on their own. Students are following the engineering design process while completing the challenges.

Getting Started with Project-Based Learning (Hint: Don't Go Crazy) Before the start of the school year, many of us want to use the remaining weeks of summer to learn some new skills -- such as project-based learning (PBL). One of the things we stress for new PBL practitioners is, as I say, "don't go crazy." It's easy to go "too big" when you first start PBL.

Modeling Introduction Abstract. Mathematics has been described as the science of patterns. Natural science can be characterized as the investigation ofpatterns in nature. Central to both domains is the notion of model as a unit of coherently structured knowledge. Modeling Theory is concerned with models as basic structures in cognition as well as scientific knowledge. It maintains a sharp distinction between mental models that people think with and conceptual models that are publicly shared.
