Apple's iPad Officially Passes the Higher Education Test [Exclusive] Apple’s iPad received glowing marks for its performance in college classrooms from the eagerly anticipated Reed College evaluation, according to a new report shared with Fast Company.
The iPad’s smooth interface kept up with the lighting-quick pace of college lectures, helping it to overcome the very same gauntlet that killed the Kindle’s hope of education dominance a year earlier. Most importantly, the report predicts an explosion of opportunity for both Apple software developers and tablet competitors. After extensive student interviews throughout the Fall 2010 semester, "The bottom line feeling was that the Amazon Kindle DX was not adequate for use in a higher education curricular setting," Chief Technology Officer Martin Ringle tells Fast Company. Chester, the CIO of Pepperdine University, discussed the ongoing controversy of how higher education has and should deal with the encroachment of the iPad on campuses throughout the country. Using information gleaned from the Educause CIO listserv, he found two camps being formed, and a bit of misinformation. The first camp's motto seems to take the position that if there is a new, potentially useful technology, it should be welcomed immediately. Seton Hill University announced that it will give an iPad to every full-time student in this fall, while George Fox University, a school that has been giving out computers to all incoming students for twenty years, is giving students a choice of either being handed an iPad or a Macbook.
Their position is that they aren't willing to say which is the better choice, and many students already come to school with a laptop. Where do you fall on this issue? [via Campus Technology] Evaluating the iPad for Education. Mobile Computing | Feature Evaluating the iPad for Education A private liberal arts college in Oregon took Apple's iPad through its paces to test its value as a a tool for learning inside the classroom and out.
The evaluation followed a pilot of Amazon's first-generation Kindle, which the college eventually decided against. In the words of the college's CIO, the Kindle just wasn't an adequate "alternative to paper. " Will the iPad change Higher Education? Digital Education Research Network (DERN) University ICT practices Posted on 17 Apr 2014 with 0 comments A group of universities in Australia collaborated in research to understand the ‘student voice’ with regard to the deployment of digital technologies.
Over 10,000 responses to a multiple choice online survey were processed followed by analysis of over 13,000 responses to four qualitative open ended questions. The research is seminal and two excellent reports have now been provided on an important ‘student voice’ factor in planning university digital technology deployment. Young Not long ago, it seemed absurd for academics to carry around a computer, camera, and GPS device everywhere they went. Actually, it still seems absurd. But many professors (and administrators) now do just that in the form of all-in-one devices. Smartphones or tablet computers combine many functions in a hand-held gadget, and some users are discovering clever ways to teach and do research with the ubiquitous machines. For many on campus, checking e-mail on the go is the first killer app of the hand-held world. A handful of colleges are running expensive pilot projects in which they give out iPhones or iPads to students and professors to see what happens when everyone goes mobile.
Some of the most innovative applications for hand-held devices, however, have come from professors working on their own. Taking Attendance Calling roll may not seem like an activity that needs an upgrade. Collecting Data Reading Scholarly Articles Recording Notes Mr. Using Textbook Tools.
