Christmas Celebrations Digital tools for educators and students Today I dove into an ocean of web sites, apps and other digital tools during my study day. I'm looking to refresh my digital skills and I had lots of ideas pop up today, while looking at some old and new web pages. Here I've tried to collect many of the ones I was introduced to today and I've also commented on some tools that I've used myself, at least a few times.Digital tools for responses/quizzes/surveys/exit tickets: (* = my favorite ones right now)
Six Amazing Websites that Make Your Writing Stronger Long writing activities are not very frequently done in class. I tend to think that my students are like me; I need the right kind of atmosphere. Writing requires time, silence and lots of inspiration. Ideally, at this time of the year, I would probably wish to be sitting next to a fireplace with the most perfect instagrammable snow falling outside my window while drinking a nice cup of coffee waiting for inspiration to strike. Unfortunately, there isn’t any snow where I live so I’ll have to make do with a bit of rain and some reddish trees.
H-index (Oulu University) There are differences in typical values of the H-index in different fields, determined in part by the average number of references in a paper in the field, the average number of papers produced by each scientist in the field, and the size (number of scientists) of the field. Subfields with typically large collaborations will exhibit larger values of the H-index. Since values of H-index increase over time, it is apparent that a scientist's H-index depends on the person's scientific age, and the H-index always puts newcomers at a disadvantage and older, well-established scientists at an advantage.
Pernilla's English Classroom: Peek of the week I encounter students on a weekly basis who say "I hate reading" or "I just can't focus on a book" ...times are changing - a great deal - and it's a fact that teenagers are becoming more digitally literate, but unfortunately more BOOK illiterate. I find this to be a necessary part of our digital evolution, however I also see it as a tragic part of a lost era where kids today are finding it hard to focus on a book, or anything else, for a longer period of time. I still remember the books that I read as a nerdy teenager, the books that became a part of my daily life, the books that still linger with me because I was sucked into them and could never leave them, books that haunted me, books that taught me a valuable lesson or two, books that made me realize that there was a different, mesmerizing, world outside of my own room, books that I need to recommend to anyone reading this. Peek of the week 18 takes a look at GREAT books:

Grade 7 Paragraph – The Canswedian English Teacher “Scaffold learning” – one of those hot button words in teaching. I got on the scaffold-their-learning train with this assignment which builds each year in högstadiet. The irony is though… that in Grade 8 when you say, “Do you remember how I taught you how to write a paragraph in Grade 7?” you will be met with a sea of blank and confused faces. Web of Science (Oulu University) The most important multidisciplinary databases containing citation information are Web of Sciece (WoS) by Thomson Reuters and Scopus by Elsevier. Citations can also be retrieved from Google Scholar (GS) keeping in mind the limitations of the database. GS contains a lot of non-scientific citations.
