Within English, the ‘GCSE Anthology Poetry Desk’ and the ‘GCSE Unseen Poetry Desk’ overlays are effective in encouraging students to respond in a more developed and sophisticated way by thinking carefully about language, themes and structure. The overlays also draw attention to the mark scheme criteria to ensure students are hitting specific skills required to achieve high marks. SOLO Taxonomy has been introduced on the ‘SOLO Surgery’ poetry overlay. Students work through the stages in a systematic and progressive way. QR codes can be utilised on text overlays. To set the scene and give a bit of background to this post, imagine back to the brilliant summer that we have just had in 2012. We were privileged to be a nation that watched one of the greatest spectacles that I have had the pleasure to see. We were immersed with stories of determination, commitment, motivation, bravery, hard work, fair play.... and blessed to see role models and stories that inspired and moved us. But after watching the Olympics, something changed within me in regards to the way I view sport. So, as any normal teachers does whilst relaxing in their summer holidays, I thought about school. It was at this time that I had also re-read Ron Berger's mind blowing book called 'An Ethic of Excellence' (recommended to me by the excellent Martin Said). What if it goes wrong? So what did I do? Our current Marking Policy was created at a moment in time when I needed to lay down the law. The quality of marking across the school was too variable. In the Beginning … When we first implemented the Marking Policy I had to speak with two departments about the quality of what was being submitted, following the monitoring of samples of books. The relative weakness in the feedback at Key Stage 3 stemmed from a lack of sufficient challenge in the curriculum.
